Seniors Section 2017

2017 Seniors’ Annual General Meeting


This was held on Wednesday 22nd November 2017.  Following lunch Club Captain, Geoff Chivers, presented Trophies to competition winners.  Around 30 section members were in attendance.  Many thanks to Chris Phillips for providing the photographs.



The Collis Bowl, winter Greensomes competition, was won by David Cowen and Ron Gillham.  In Ron’s absence, David (pictured with Geoff Chivers and Geoff Civil) collected the trophy for them both.  The runners-up were Mike Barraclough and Richard Parry.




The Gerry Wild Salver, Summer singles KO competition, was won by Mike Barraclough and the runner-up was John Kiley.





The John Cunningham Salver, awarded to the person who achieves the highest number of points in qualifying for the Ron Stanbrook competition, was won by David Cowen.  David also won the Parfitt Salver for having the highest total number of points from their best 5 monthly stablefords between March and October.  Runner up in the Parfitt was Colin Shearer who was not present at the AGM.






The Harry Greenwood Trophy, for the winner of the June Stableford, was David Pope.  Far right is Peter White receiving the Alan Peters Cup for winning the October Stableford.

The winner of the Millenium Putter (three clubs and a putter Stableford) was Tony Parkinson.  Due to hospitalisation, he was unable to attend.

Mon 16th OctFlag CompetitionWon by John Kiley in the final group holing out on the 18th with 2 strokes to spare.
Wed 11th OctSeniors StablefordWinner, Peter White with 39 points also wins the Alan Peters trophy. Second was Peter McGeachie on 38 points.
Fri 6th OctLoving Cup match vs LadiesAfter a very close contest we held onto the Trophy for another year by virtue of a 3-3 draw with the Ladies.
Wed 4th OctRe-arranged away Friendly at BasingstokeBasingstoke fielded a strong team, clearly still smarting after their 6-0 defeat at Reading. Thanks to a win from Barrie Lister and David Smith we avoided a whitewash on their course!
Thu 14 SeptStanbrook Final at HenleyOur only success was Jim Purchell winning 'nearest the pin in two' on the 17th.
Wed 13th SeptMillenium Putter CompetitionVery windy conditions kept the scoring low. The winner with 32 points was Tony Parkinson, with Chris Phillips runner up with 29.
Mon 11th SeptHenley League match (home)A win for Reading 4-2 in this final league match of 2017.
Wed 6th SeptSeniors StablefordJohn Beville was the clear winner on 39 points. Stephen Lee took second place by countback over Chris Phillips and Geoff Civil, all on 36 points.
Thu 31st AugPresident's Prize for Seniors CompetitionWon by Colin Tungate with 39 points. David Kennedy was second after countback with Jeffery Smith, both on 37.
Mon 21st AugCalcot league match (away)A 5-1 defeat. A win by Jim Purchell and Colin Shearer saved us from a whitewash.
Mon 14th AugSonning League match (home)An excellent effort from all Reading players resulted in a 6-0 victory.
Wed 9th AugBasingstoke Friendly match (away)Unfortunately this match had to be called off due to the weather. It may be able to be rearranged later this year.
Mon 7th AugSeniors StablefordWon by John Beville with 40 points; then Mike Barraclough 2nd over Jim Purchell after countback, both with 39.
Mon 31st JulyMichael Tierney Centenary TrophyCongratulations to Jeff Smith who won with a nett score of 71 in difficult conditions. Close runners up were John Street and Colin Reed with 72 nett.

Fri 21st JulyFrilford Heath Friendly (home)We drew 3-3.
Mon 17th JulyHP Soundy CupWon by Tony Parkinson on 41 points, with Eddie Brooks second on 40.

Wed 12th JulySeniors ChampionshipA win for Bert Neo with nett 68 strokes. Sandy Brown and Ron Nappin were placed 2nd and 3rd, both with nett 70.
Mon 10th JulyEast Berks League match (home)With some hotly contested matches, we had a 3.5 - 2.5 win.
Mon 3rd JulySeniors StablefordWon by Tony Laverick on 41 points with David Cowen second on 40.
Fri 30th JuneBuchanan #3A 2.5 - 1.5 win over the C team so we have a slender lead at the top of the table.
Mon 26th JuneHenley League match (away)Home advantage gave Henley a 5-1 win, Colin Tungate making an eagle on the 18th to provide our only point.
Mon 19th JuneCastle Royle Friendly match (away)In very warm conditions home advantage won out and we lost 5-1.
Wed 14th JuneGoring & Streatley League match (home)A 3.5 - 2.5 win, avenging our earlier defeat.
Monday 12th JuneYellow Ball CompetitionA very close win for the team of Mike Barraclough, Dave Cowen and Sandy Brown with 112 points. Next best were two other teams tied on 111 points. Mike's birdie on the 18th clinched it!
Fri 9th JuneBuchanan #2An excellent 3-1 win over the 19+ side leaves us joint top of the league with the C team who we play next. Thanks to Tony Parkinson for captaining this one.
