About The Caversham

The Caversham is a wonderful modern, family friendly golf and hospitality facility located to the north of the River Thames just outside of Reading.

The Caversham is the Home to Reading Golf Club who relocated here in 2021 after having undertaken a huge re-development of the existing Caversham Heath Golf Course that began in May 2019. The golf course was re-designed by the renowned Canadian golf course architect Thomas McBroom, his first UK project and the renamed Eyston Course (after it’s founder Jack Eyston) opened to the high acclaim of many respected figures in the golf industry in April 2021 and is already playing host to prestigious golf tournaments. Renowned for it’s free draining properties, the Eyston Course offers first class all year round golf with 8 different layouts of varying lengths from 5519yds to 7265 available to choose from. With extensive practice facilities, The Caversham offers our members and visitors the opportunity to hone and improve their golfing skills under the watchful eyes of our team of highly respected PGA Professionals. These facilities are planned to be enhanced with the addition of a 6 hole academy course and new practice area in the coming years that will further the reputation of The Caversham as a premier golf club in the South of England.

The Vision

Building a Club

For the Future

At The Caversham, we not only uphold the cherished traditions and etiquette of the game but also recognise the historical barriers that have made golf less accessible. Over the years, the image of golf has been unfairly tarnished by misconceptions. We firmly believe that golf is an enjoyable and engaging sport, and our mission is to provide everyone with the chance to experience this joy at The Caversham!

Since the inception of The Caversham concept several years ago, our vision at Reading Golf Club has remained resolute. We set out to create a facility in the heart of North Reading that harmoniously complements our championship course. Our goal was to establish a welcoming and relaxed environment, offering an on-site pathway for individuals to embrace golf as a regular pursuit. Our ambition is to introduce the sport to anyone with an interest, regardless of their background or experience. With the imminent opening of our academy course, all the necessary elements will be in place for every family member to embark on a journey of experiencing and relishing in regular golf.

Golf extends beyond the fairways; it’s a holistic endeavor that contributes to health and well-being. Regardless of age, the benefits of golf are vast. We take pride in welcoming junior members as young as six and senior members well into their 90s. These individuals truly exemplify the rewards of engaging in regular outdoor activity amidst our picturesque surroundings.

Our clubhouse aims to be a tranquil haven from the modern pace of life. It’s a space where you can unwind, connect with fellow enthusiasts, and relish in the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

A TOM McBROOM COURSE

The Tom McBroom signature has become synonymous with the design and construction of outstanding golf courses across North America and around the world. His work has stood the test of time and his courses are routinely ranked amongst the best in Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. The cornerstone of his work is a profound understanding and fascination with the history and tradition of the game in combination with his own creative flair and vision. The hallmark of a McBroom course is one that is beautiful, dramatic, memorable and fun to play and this is what you will experience at The Caversham.

History of The Caversham

The original Reading Golf Club began life in Tilehurst as a 9-hole golf course across the river from our current home, in 1898. in 1910 The Caversham and South Oxfordshire Golf Club 18 hole course was formed in Emmer Green, mainly by members of the Reading Golf Club. The course in Tilehurst closed in 1918 and many of the original Reading Golf Club trophies were acquired by The Caversham and South Oxfordshire Golf Club.

This club was renamed Reading Golf Club in 1940. Over many years the club investigated options and opportunities to sell part of it’s land to ease financial concerns and worries. Although our course in Emmer Green was much loved by the members the financial concerns that had always existed heightened through the late 90’s and early 2000’s with the provision of many more modern courses and facilities and a significant downturn in the popularity of golf.

A decision was taken in 2018 to sell the Emmer Green land for housing development and to relocate the club to a more modern, all year round course that also offered the opportunity for additional revenue streams. Reading Golf Club moved to the course that was formerly known as Caversham Heath and this was renamed The Caversham, Home of Reading Golf Club and re-opened after major refurbishment of the golf course on 1st April 2021.
